I recently asked my cousin, why do we sew? We are only second generation of sewers. My Mother and Aunt sewed, but not the Grandmother I knew (she cooked), but I heard tales of the Grandmother I never knew, did sew. She passed away when my Mother was 4. So is it in the DNA…..don’t know, but what I do know is there was power in the needle.
Growing up, there was always creativity going on in the house. Making things, was just common place. There was always a sewing machine in the home, always a sewing project, starting or finishing. I even had a small toy Singer sewing machine…..of course we (my Mother and I) made doll clothes for my Barbie dolls, from bits and pieces of left over fabrics….was that where that first bit of patchwork seed was planted?
My thought bubble has examined the power of sewing. What I discovered, it was an unconscious power we had, every time we made something. I definitely don’t think we thought of it as powerful…..but it was. We had a vision for ourselves and then made that vision a reality.
Body of Work explores my sewing journey, where these creative ideas were planted, nurtured, and cultivated. This is a capsule collection of one of a kind coats/jackets, using the fabrics in my stash, patch working it all together just like my Mother taught me to do so many years ago.
